Brian Curtin is an Irish-born lecturer, art writer and curator of contemporary art. He holds a Ph.D. in studio art from the University of Bristol and lectures in the Department of Communication Design at the Faculty of Architecture of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. In 2018 he was temporary Director of Sàn Art, a non-profit in Ho Chi Minh City, where he oversaw Uncommon Pursuits: A Temporary School for Emergent Curators in Southeast Asia and developed a curatorial programme titled Intimate Histories. This programme aimed to excavate under-examined moments in the history of modern and contemporary art in Vietnam with experimental methodologies.
Brian writes on dialogues between contemporary art, Queer theory and studies in visual and material cultures. His essays, reviews, interviews and commentary have been published in Art Journal, Flash Art, Artforum.com, Art Asia Pacific, Art Review Asia, Frieze, The Journal of Curatorial Studies, Parachute, Public Culture and Craft Research, amongst others. His published profiles of artists include Sopheap Pich, Jakkai Siributr, Collier Schorr, Paul Pfeiffer, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. He has presented on topics related to Southeast Asian Studies at conferences and symposia in Kuala Lumpur, Kyoto, London and Singapore. And has held writer's residencies in Beijing and Kuala Lumpur.
Brian's curated exhibitions include China, New York, Korea and the UK as well as regionally. He managed the experimental venue H Project Space in Bangkok from 2011-2018 which now functions under the mantle Brian Curtin Projects. His curatorial work has been been funded by the Arts Council England and Australia Council for the Arts. He has been a nominator for the Prix Pictet award in photography, the Sovereign Art Prize, and collaborations with Saatchi Gallery London.
Current projects include a monograph on contemporary art in Thailand with Reaktion Books in the UK.
